Crannog

The National Monuments Service's description

In the waters of Lough Talt, c. 5m from the S shoreline. Views are restricted due to the mountainous terrain. A subrectangular low-cairn crannog (15m N-S; 15m E-W; H 1.25m above the lake-bed). The grass-covered raised centre has a thin soil cover with a scatter of flat stones (diam. 0.6-0.7m) on top of smaller subangular stones (diam. 0.2-0.3m) forming a firm surface. The edge of this raised area drops sharply down to the surrounding berm. The stony edge of the crannog slopes gradually into the water. The NW corner protrudes slightly and from it a submerged causeway leads out to the NW to another submerged platform which could not be inspected. A stony causeway (L 5m; Wth 0.4m) at S connects the crannog to the lakeshore. Another crannog (SL030-002----) is c. 1.2km to NNW in the N end of Lough Talt.
