Ringfort - cashel

On top of an E-W ridge, at the edge of a steep bluff. An oblong area (26m E-W; 16m N-S) defined NNW-NNE by the break of slope at the top of the bluff and elsewhere by a slight moss-covered rise (Wth 1.5m) outside which the ground falls away gently in a natural slope. At the base of the slope, at a distance of 8-10m from the inner wall, is an outer enclosing wall. It is difficult to trace NE-SE and is truncated in parts by small areas of quarrying. It survives S-NW as a sod-covered stony bank (Wth c. 3m) topping a low scarp (H 0.7m). A third wall and outer fosse are visible as cropmarks in an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3043089-90) along the WNW arc outside and separated from the second wall by an intervening fosse. A cliff-edge fort (SL021-046002-) is visible on higher ground c. 150m to NE. The remains of a field system (SL021-046004-) lie in the surrounding field to E, S and W. There is a possible hut site (SL021-046006-) c. 20m to SW.
