The National Monuments Service's description

One of seven middens (SL019-057001-, SL019-057002-, SL019-057003-, SL019-057004-, SL019-057005-, SL019-057006-, SL019-057007-) identified along a 1.3km length of shoreline on the W side of Ballisodare Bay, four in Tanrego West townland and three in Tanrego East or Carrowmore townland. This large midden follows the curve of the coastline for c.40m. On inspection in 1994 it was found to be composed of a layer of oyster shells with smaller quantities of periwinkle and limpet shells (D 1m - 1.2m). A hearth was also identified. The midden is directly beneath the sod and is underlain by a compact orange, sandy subsoil. In places, where the underlying layer has been undercut by wave action, the midden layer forms an overhang. A late-17th century copper alloy token was recovered from this midden in 2000: it is in the National Museum of Ireland (pers. comm. M.A. Timoney). (Synge 1985, 128)
