The National Monuments Service's description
Situated in a hollow at the base of a slight SW-facing slope, on N shore of Lough Gill, in mature deciduous forest. The well consists of a natural spring that has been lined by a roughly rectangular drystone wall (dims. L NW-SE 2m; Wth NE-SW 1.25m; Max Ht 0.6m). An irregular N-S orientated outflow channel (Wth 0.3m; L 2.5m) extends from the S corner of the wall into the lake. The level base of the well is covered with sand, gravel and some rubble rocks. Mature beech trees grow immediately to the E and S of the well with the roots of these trees extending along the SW and SE sides of the wall. Rags tied to these roots indicate that the well is still in use. Wood-Martin (1882, 91-2) attributes the well to St. Connell whose feast day is celebrated on June 2nd.
