The National Monuments Service's description
O'Rourke refers to a 'silver and lead mine . . . upon the very Harbour-mouth of Sligo, "in a little demy-island commonly called Coney Island", this last being the only one of the three mentioned by Boate, in his 'Natural History of Ireland', as if the others were unknown to him.' (O'Rourke 1890, vol. 1, 15).
