Ringfort - rath

Situated on a slight rise, in gently undulating pasture, on a slight S-facing slope. An enclosure (SL008-181---* / SL005-114---) is located 60m to the NE. Slightly raised oval area (dims. 33m N-S; 38m E-W) enclosed by a substantial bank of earth and stone (Wth 4.5m; int. H 1m; ext. H 2.5m). At the external foot of the bank is a broad flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 5.2m; D 0.9m). The bank and is best preserved NNE-ENE. From E-ESE the external face of the bank has been quarried out almost entirely removing the bank. The external face of the bank has been cut back and is now almost vertical ESE-S. A now relic modern drystone wall lies along the inner base of the bank S ? W. The fosse is best preserved NNE-E. A drystone wall has been built across the fosse at E and the fosse is infilled and barely visible E-SE. From SE-WSW the fosse is absent and a now disused track lies along the line of the fosse. A modern N-S orientated drain has been cut along the line of the fosse WSW-NW with spoil from the cutting of the drain has been used to infill the fosse NW-NNW. There are two breaks in the bank, at NW (Wth 2m) and at SE (Wth 2m), either of which could mark the position of an original entrance. Dumps of field clearance rocks are located at the centre of the interior.
