Ringfort - cashel

Situated on a slight rise on the summit of a NW-SE orientated ridge in a mature coniferous forest clearing. Raised circular area (dims. 23.5m E-W; 23m N-S) enclosed by an internal rubble limestone wall (Wth 3.6m; int. H 1.75m). Immediately outside the wall is a level berm (Wth 3.25m) and a rubble limestone bank (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.4m) with an external fosse (Wth 6.3m; D 0.4m). The inner face of the internal wall has been entirely rebuilt and it extends 1-1.2m above the level of the surviving original wall and the original external basal facing of large thick slabs and blocks laid flat survives on all sides. A vertically backed recess (Wth base 1.1m; Wth top 2m; D 0.5m) at ESE in the internal face may be original. From SW-NW the external stone bank and the fosse are absent and the site is defined by a scarped edge (ext. H 1.4m). A break (Wth 1.9m) in the internal wall with a corresponding break (Wth 2m) in the external bank and a stone causeway (Wth 2.3m) across the fosse marks the position of the original entrance. A modern NW-SE orientated field wall lies on the W side of the site crossing the external stone bank at external fosse at SW and at NW. Relic field walls link to the external face of the external stone bank at NNE and at SSE and a relic field wall lies along the SW side of the entrance causeway, extending across the berm and linking to the external face of the internal wall at SE. The remains of a souterrain (SL005-118002-) are located to N and NW of centre in the interior.
