Kiln - corn-drying

The National Monuments Service's description

On a slight SW-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (E3329) during 2007 at Kilbegly 1 as part of the Athlone to Ballinasloe M6 road development revealed seven pits, one of which, a figure-of-eight pit (max. dims 2.4m NNE-SSW; 1.7m WNW-ESE; D 0.25m) was a corn-drying kiln. About 34m to the N was a slightly curved trench (L 10.8m; Wth 0.5m; D 0.32m) with some animal bones, which may have been s slot-trench for a wind-break. A sample from the kiln produced a C14 determination of cal. AD 1454-1631, providing a late medievel date. The church (RO054-027001-) is c. 350m to the ENE, holy well (RO054-026----) is c. 180m to the SE and the horizontal water mill (RO054-068----), with which the corn-drying kiln is not connected, is c. 110m to the SW.
