The National Monuments Service's description
A togher is marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 (Simington 1949, Athone) and described as Toughow, running S from Carrowreagh. Togher is a townland at the E end of a bog that extends W to the River Suck (dims c. 3 km E-W; c. 1 km N-S), and is a Bord na Mona bog and wildlife sanctuary. The road is clearly marked as being towards the E end of the bog, and the N-S R357 Athleague to Ballinasloe road E of the bog may be intended, a minor road crossing the bog NE-SW (L c. 550m) and connecting Carrowreagh and Cloonaddron townlands might also have been intended.
