Water mill - vertical-wheeled

The National Monuments Service's description

A mill is marked in this area on the Strafford map of c. 1636 at a place called Stratamery, just SE of Mullagh (Simington 1949, Athlone (73)). The mill, described as at Ballycreggan, was owned by John Mc Robert O'Naughton in 1641 along with 287 acres there, but the property had passed to the Countess of Fingal and Colonel William Legg by the 1660's (ibid. 97). In the 19th century Millnaghten mill was the property of the Grainger estate who leased it to Mongans, but by 1861 the lease was taken by Bartholomew O'Brien of Atteagh Mills, c. 1km to the N, who probably built the present buildings on the W bank of the N-S Cross River. These consist of a three-bay three-storey mill with a two-bay, two-storey structure attached to the W, which is thought to be the original mill but is probably coeval with the larger part. The mill continued to be operated by the O'Briens' into the 1940s. None of the remains can be assigned with certainly to the 17nth century. (Egan 2004, 65-73)
