The National Monuments Service's description

A castle is marked on the Straffod map of c. 1636 at Killcare (Simington 1949, Athlone (183)), but it was not encountered during field survey. Edward Mc Conor Kelly owned the largest portion of 440 acres there in 1641, but there is no mention of a castle and this land had passed to Sir Like Dowdall by the 1660s (ibid. 100).
