The National Monuments Service's description
In an inquisition of the 29th April in the 6th year of Queen Elizabeth (1564) the abbot of Cloontuskert (RO037-001001-) was seized of, amongst other possessions, the town (Vill) of Boalalege (Ballyleague) which had a castle (RO037-004----) and six cottages. Quoted by J. O'Donovan in 1837 (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 1, 49). This is now Lanesborough, but the part of Lanesborough W of the river Shannon is still known locally as Ballyleague.
