House - 17th century

On a gentle SW-facing slope. Marked on the 1837 and 1929 eds of the OS 6-inch map as ruined houses, including a probable T-shaped house that is positioned at the NW end of a NW-SE avenue (RO034-113----). The house is a rectangular grass-covered platform (dims 8m NW-SE; 7.5m NE-SW) defined by scarps (H 0.2m). Attached to the SE is a sunken grass-covered rectangular area (dims 7m NW-SE; 6.7m NE-SW) defined by grass-covered banks (Wth 1.5-3.2m; int. H 0.7-0.85m; ext. H 0.2-0.55m) at NE and SW and by a scarp down to the interior (H 0.45m) at SE. Immediately to the W is an area with out-houses represented by a jumble of earthen banks covering an area of c. 1 acre (c. 0.4 ha). It is possible that the house and much of the complex could date to the 17th or early 18th century. In 1641 Sir Ulick Burke owned 300 acres at Killinraght and the unknown Carrowbroghlohan but by 1669 this land had passed to a Chidley Coote as the largest portion of an estate that included 444 acres in four other parcels within Oran parish (Simington 1949, 52). The process is not documented, but the Coote family could have made Killinraghty the demesne land of their estate in Ballymoe half barony where they held about 300 acres outside Oran parish (ibid. 53-8).
