Ringfort - rath

On a knoll at the W end of a low WNW-ESE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 47.3m E-W; 43.6m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5.5-6.7m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 1.9-2.4m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5.7-7.5m; Wth of base 2.8-3.5m; D 0.8m at N and S to 1.7-1.9m at E and W) from an overgrown outer bank (Wth 2m at S to 4-4.5m generally; ext. H 1.1-1.3m) which has external facing stones (max. ext. diam. 72m E-W; 66m N-S). The entrance (Wth 3m) through the inner bank and the causeway (Wth 4m) are at ESE, but there is no corresponding gap in the outer bank. There are other gaps through both banks at SSW, WSW and NE. Archaeological testing (02E0766) c. 70-150m to the NE failed to produce any related material (Read 2004c). Rath (RO023-113----) is c. 200m to the NE.
