The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on flat land in undulating countryside, 100m NW of Moatland Cottage. Present remains consist of a nearly square shaped platform (dims. 18.5m N-S x 17m E-W; ext. H 0.7m) with slightly domed interior. No outer fosse or entrance feature visible. Not depicted as an antiquity on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Depicted as a square-shaped copse of trees on the 1838 and 1908 editions of the OS 6-inch maps. Described in the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books of 1838-40 as to the N of Moatland Cottage are '2 moats or enclosures of plantations, from which it has very probably derived its name' (OSFNB 1838-40). This earthwork was probably a landscape feature or tree-ring of post-1700 date associated with nearby Moatland Cottage.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
