The National Monuments Service's description

Site of a possible grove of trees of doubtful archaeological significance that was depicted in the first edition of the OS six inch map. Not visible at ground level. Of doubtful archaeological significance.

A planning application was submitted to erect a new dwelling house incorporating garage, effluent treatment unit with percolation area and all associated site works. This application is the subject of a further information request which included that the site should be tested prior to development. The site is situated in undulating lowland in Breaghmore townland, Co. Offaly. At the time of excavation the area was in rich pasture. The site is located on the boundary of the archaeological exclusion zone around OF036–038. This monument has been levelled in the past and no surface traces of the site were evident on the ground at the time of excavation. The trial excavation carried out by Martin Doody under licence No. 07E0284 on the footprint of the proposed development produced only a single archaeological feature in Trench 2, the possible base of a cultivation furrow (Bennett 2010, 396).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
