The National Monuments Service's description
No surface trace visible of togher in the area marked on the OS 6-inch map. Described by Davies (1942) as a track which does not look very old climbs the hill on to the ridge at the church (OF026-017001-) and continues along the ridge to the castle (OF026-018----) on site of modern road.
Archaeological testing under licence no. 04E0009 was carried out as part of the planning schedule for a single-house development adjacent to a barrow, a togher and an enclosure at Urney, Geashill, Co. Offaly. A series of trenches were excavated by mechanical digger at the house site, entrance and percolation area. No features or finds of archaeological significance were revealed (Excavations Bulletin 2004).
John Purcell, 17 Balmoral Terrace, Dillon's Cross, Cork.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
