The National Monuments Service's description
According to Comerford there 'formerly stood a chapel, as we see by one of the inquisitions already quoted. This has completely disappeared. It was replaced by the humble thatched chapel of the penal times, of which no vestige now remains; but there are old inhabitants still living who heard Mass in it in their childhood, previous to the building, in 1808, of the present respectable and commodious parish church' (Comerford 1883, 196).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
