The National Monuments Service's description

Not visible at ground level. Mac Coghlan castle demolished in 1548. Described in 1942 as 'the ruins are very insignificant and are very overgrown with weeds and bushes. A very well preserved moat surrounds the former castle' (ITA Survey 1942). This moat appears to have formed the defensive feature of the bawn (OF022-003002-) of Moystown Castle. (Cooke 1875, 335-6; O' Flanagan 1933, vol. 1, 58)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
