The National Monuments Service's description

A hazel-wood tree plantation that appears to be a designed landscape feature of post-1700 AD date. However as it is depicted as an antiquity on the current edition of the OS 6-inch map, it may have been a ringfort that was converted into a tree-ring during the 18th century.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
