The National Monuments Service's description

Described by E. c. Armstrong in 1916 as 'When Murphy's house was being built, about three years ago, three skeletons, said to have been in excellent preservation, were found when excavating the foundations close to the rock, not more than one foor or a foot and a half from the surface' (Armstrong 1916, 184-5).

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
