The National Monuments Service's description
Unclassified and undated small earth and stone mound (H c. 3.75m, base max. diam. 8.7m N-S). Could be the remains of a spoil heap belonging to the large stone quarry at its SE side and wide shallow fosse at W. However the mound is depicted as an antiquity on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map which suggests that it is not related to quarrying activities. Could be the remains of a small burial mound, or some earthwork associated with adjoining earthworks of the deserted medieval village (OF010-010001-).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
