The National Monuments Service's description
National Monument No. 81. No surface trace visible of the Bishops Chapel (OPW 1906-7, 4). Not marked on the OS 6-inch map but marked on the 25-inch OS 6-inch map as 'Temple Espaic' (site of) along the external face of the S wall of the graveyard to the E of Temple Gauney (OF005-011----). Also depicted on Monahans map of Clonmacnoise as Temple Aspick (Diocese of Ardagh 1886). Ware's map of 1658 shows the church having a W door with high pitched gabled roof (Manning 1994, 16).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Offaly' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
