The National Monuments Service's description

What might be the wooden chute of a horizontal mill from Ardragh, is described and illustrated but not recognised as such by Shirley (1845, 209), although it might be a trough. It is described as ’12 feet long and 3 feet broad (c. 3.65m x 0.9m)’ and closed at both ends. The precise location of the discovery is not known.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
