The National Monuments Service's description
Located just off the SE end of a NW-SE drumlin ridge on the S side. This is a raised circular and grass-covered area (diam. 40.5m ENE-WSW; 36.5m NNW-SSE) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H c. 0.5m; ext. H c. 1.5-2m) and hedge that has external facing stones WSW-N. There are traces of an outer fosse that are best preserved (Wth of top 3m; Wth of base 1.3m; ext. D 1m) SE-S. The modern entrance (Wth 4m) and causeway (Wth of top 3.6m; H 0.8m) at SE may be on the site of the original. There is a local tradition of an underground passage that might be a souterrain (MO025-043002-) SW of the centre but there is no physical evidence of this.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
