The National Monuments Service's description

Located in a narrow E-W valley surrounded by drumlins. Corlougharoe Lough is now a sub-triangular lake (dims c. 225m E-W; c. 40-90m N-S) but it was a larger oval feature (dims c. 350m E-W; c. 190m N-S) with an island depicted in the middle of it on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map. The island is now attached to the S shore as a peninsula and the crannog is visible as a circular grass and scrub-covered platform (diam. 18m; H 0.5m) rising to a stony mound (diam. 2m; H 0.7m) at the centre which is c. 1.7m over the present water level. Traces of a kerb exist on the NE side, outside of which some piles were visible before the cairn disappears into deep water.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
