Crannog

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated close to the tip of a promontory on the SE shore of Lough Oony, a rectangular lough (max. dims c. 500m NE-SW; c. 280m NW-SE) that is now shrunken a little. There are references to Lough Uaithne in the Annals of Ulster from AD 719 to 1025 when the men of Fermanagh killed 17 people on the lake shore (Smyth 1954, 3). Two islands are depicted on the 1834 and 2907 editions of the OS 6-inch map. This southern feature is an oval wooded area (dims 23m E-W; 18m N-S; H 0.5m of the water) connected by swampy ground to the SE shore. Two oak piles were identified in 1983 and erosion of the perimeter revealed a matrix of small stones and brushwood matting with some animal bones and charcoal. Crannog (MO012-006----) is c. 50m to the N.
