The National Monuments Service's description
Situated towards the NE end of the oval Mullaghmore Lake (dims c. 380m NE-SW; c. 200m NW-SE) that has shrunk somewhat from its representation on the 1834 edition of the OS 6-inch map (dims c. 500m NE-SW; c. 300m NW-SE). This is a circular overgrown cairn (diam. 28m E-W; 25m N-S) which has evidence of a retaining kerb, and it is located in deep water. Five large oak piles were noted protruding through the cairn on the S side.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
