The National Monuments Service's description
Located in the rectangular (dims c. 700m N-S; c. 600m E-W) Emy Lough close to the S shore. A crannog is not depicted on any OS map, but the lake and ‘the Island’ are depicted on maps of Co. Monaghan from c. 1590 by Browne and Bocazio, and from c. 1591 and c. 1598 by Jobson. As a high status site it is argued that it could have been occupied by the McKenna leadership into the sixteenth century (McDermott 2010, 400-402, figs 4, 6). This is a submerged cairn (diam. c. 15m), which and it is located at the point where four townlands meet c. 100m from the S shore. It is normally c. 1-2m below lake level but its location is marked by a pole.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
