The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a slight N-facing slope. Archaeological testing (05E1321) by S. Halliday (2007) identified archaeological features that were further excavated (06E0779) by the same archaeologist when a ditch (Wth of top 2.53-2.8m; D 0.72-0.8m) curving to the N at either end (L c. 16m) and extending beyond the development area was recorded (excavations.ie 2006:1497). If the ditch completed a circle (diam. c. 40m) much of it is preserved in a green area within the development. The ditch is gently rounded with clayey fills containing some animal bone together with crushed and unbroken shell in some layers that had slumped in from both sides. The ditch was re-cut in at least one point. Some medieval pottery was recovered from the ditch, which cuts some slight N-S linear features. The enclosure ditch was overlain by three pathways that probably ran between the church (ME045-004----) to the S and the ford (ME045-005002-) on the Broadmeadow River c. 150m to the N. The paths were partly cut by some pits from which medieval ceramics were recovered. A final post-medieval phase is represented by two field drains. (Halliday 2008)
