The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a slight S-facing slope. Archaeological centre-line testing (04E0479) by T. O’Neill of Testing Area 17, Contract 1, prior to the construction of the M3 motorway (excavations.ie: 2004:1337) identified archaeological material which was completely excavated (E003046) by S. Linnane as Roestown 4 in June 2006 (excavations.ie 2006:1635). Three pits (dims 0.48m; D 0.06m; to 1.4m x 0.6m; D 0.25m) were in a confined area (dims c. 4m x c. 4m), although one pit (dims 1.29m x 0.48m; D 0.08m) produced a sherd of green bottle glass and is modern. There is also a small pit (dims 0.55m x 0.41m; D 0.43m) c. 10m to the N and a slight linear feature (dims 1.38m E-W; 0.31m N-S; D 0.1m) c. 15m to the E. The fills from the other pits contain some burnt clay and charcoal dominated by hazel, and are interpreted as domestic waste as there was no in situ burning. A sample of cremated animal bone from one of the pits produced a C14 date of 386-183 cal. BC (BETA 247580). (Linnane 2008)
