The National Monuments Service's description
Five areas with metalworking activity associated with features from the first millennium AD were recovered in excavation at the Knowth cemetery of prehistoric passage tombs. This is metalworking area 4, which is an isolated area on the summit of the great mound at SW and on the line of the inner fosse of the rath (ME019-030040-). It consists of a charcoal-filled pit (dims 0.65m x 0.52m), two furnace-bottoms with reddened clay attached, and areas of slag and pits. (Eogan 2012, 151-3)
