Mill - corn

The National Monuments Service's description

This detached three-bay single-storey mill with half-attic is named 'Corn Mills' on the OS 1st ed. 6-inch map. It was in use in 1916 and closed in 1980. The mill was conserved in 2001 and is now disused. It is one of the few surviving examples of a horizontal-wheeled grain mill, a type that went out of fashion in Ireland by the middle of the 17th century (Rynne 2006, 32). It is described as follows by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (Reg. No. 31311706): 'Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, and cast-iron rainwater goods retaining cast-iron downpipes. Repointed rubble limestone battered walls with benchmark-inscribed tooled hammered limestone flush quoins to corners. Pair of square-headed door openings with tooled hammered limestone lintels. Square-headed window openings (half-attic) with hammered limestone lintels framing replacement fixed-pane timber fittings. Set in unkempt grounds on a corner site perpendicular to road.'
This is a national monument in State care (no. 664).
