The National Monuments Service's description

Knox (1911, 328) recorded a possible castle at the NW end of Cottage townland. It was associated with earthworks (MA103-053002-) consisting of a complex of large rectangular enclosures defined by banks/ramparts and ditches. His scale plan shows a semicircular feature marked 'H' at the junction of two of the enclosures, which he describes as follows: 'H is an excavation, the site of a castle.' It would seem there were no extant remains of a castle, and his evidence for its existence must have been based on local tradition or hearsay. He described that the location as 'close to Cottage Bridge over the Clare River, and close to the site of an old church [MA103-052----] called Kilthooye. Bellaveel Castle [MA103-051----] was on the opposite side of the river.'
