The National Monuments Service's description
In pasture, on elevated ground c. 100m N of Island Lake.
An arc of bank (cord L c. 30m) curving S−NW is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is not shown on later map editions. Remnants of this earthwork were still visible in the early 1900’s when Knox (1911, 337-338) recorded it as follows ‘This D-shaped work is of uncertain origin….The work is much ruined and obliterated in parts. It consists of garth and rampart, and ditch and outer rampart. The height of the inner rampart above the ditch varies from 6 feet [1.8m] at the south side to 3 feet [0.9m]. Both inner and outer ramparts are much ruined. The inner rises now but 2 feet [0.6m] above the garth at the highest. The ditch is about 12 feet wide [3.6m]. The greatest diameter over all is 57 yards [52m] from east to west and 41 yards [37m] from north to south.’ There is no visible trace at ground level.
