Anomalous stone group

In a flat expanse of damp, rush-grown pasture, bordering the SE shore of Cloonacurry Lough. To S and SW there is a gradual rise in ground level, and the N and NE side of the lake is bordered by a low ridge. The land was converted to forestry in 2015. This consists of a row (L c. 5.5m NNE–SSW) of six large, close-set stones (L 0.8-1.77; T 0.15-0.35m), with their long axes parallel. Some of the stones are embedded in the ground, protruding no more than c. 0.5m above the surface, and others lie prostrate on the surface, with gaps of c. 0.4-0.6 between individual stones. Some smaller stones barely protruding from the surface can be seen adjacent to the larger stones. The row is aligned NNE–SSW. The long axes of almost all the stones are NW–SE or E–W, more or less at right angles to the overall alignment of the row. The stones are partly obscured by moss and sod. They occur in an area of damp, peaty soil which is largely stone free. There is a burnt mound (MA092-125----) 16m to E.
