Possibly in proximity to a rath (MA092-030001-), in a low-lying expanse of damp, rush-grown pasture. The adjacent fields to E have been converted to forestry plantation.
Knox (1908, 110) theorised that 'We may suppose ….Lisanaffrin [rath MA092-030001-] to have been occupied by millers and others whose work required an abundance of water, as a mill-stream runs by it and an ancient millstone lies near.’ And in a later paper he added that the rath was ‘an ordinary fort with an ancient millstream passing by its ditch. An ancient small millstone lies in the river near it.’(Knox 1911, 230).
A stagnant stream/field ditch, which lies immediately to W–NW of the rath, may be the watercourse interpreted by Knox as a millsteam. Another, larger drain, which coincides with the townland boundary, is a few meters to E of the rath. The millstone was not located during a field inspection in 1998, nor was there any evidence at ground level of a mill.
