The National Monuments Service's description

The Strafford Inquisition of County Mayo compiled in the early 1600’s for Thomas Wentworth, Lord Deputy, created 1st Earl of Strafford by Charles I in 1640, records '…1/4 part of the castle and qr of land of Derryowle..' (O’Sullivan 1958, 92). The exact location of this castle is unknown.
