Fulacht fia

The National Monuments Service's description

Situated on the banks of a small stream at the upper, western end of the broad valley that opens out at the Island’s harbour. The stream rises on the southern flank of the valley and runs downslope in a SW–NE direction through enclosed pasture fields. All that is visible of the fulacht fia are intermittent pockets of heat-fractured stone exposed in both faces of the stream bank. On the N bank, pockets of small, heat-fractured angular stone are visible intermittently over a distance of 3.8m in the grassy face of the bank. The top of the stones lie c. 0.2–0.3m below the ground surface. Opposite this, on the southern bank, another pocket of small angular stones is discernible (L c. 1m × T 0.3m) beneath the sod and overlying a peaty layer. Some heat-fractured stone is also visible at the northern end of a small mound-like feature (N–S 1.5m, E–W 2.6m) that juts out into the stream bed from the southern bank at this point, but no definite trace of any surface features survive.
