The National Monuments Service's description
Situated on a flat marshy commonage close to the sea cliffs c. 500m SSE of the signal tower. An old wall, part of the extensive series of boundaries on this part of commonage (MA084-001001-), runs past c. 5m to N following a NW–SE axis. Variously described by Westropp (1911a, 17) as ‘an irregular loop of small set stones’ and a ‘circle of moderate-sized stones set in the sward’ (1911a, 19). It comprises a circular area (N–S, 7.6m, E–W 7.5m) defined by an intermittent line of set stones and small boulders (Wth 0.6m max.). It is best defined in the north-western sector where two contiguous set stones up to 0.4m high are located. There is no definite trace of an entrance, although there is a large gap (Wth c. 4m) in the south-western sector. The interior is flat but marshy underfoot.
The above description is derived from: New Survey of Clare Island. Volume 5: Archaeology. Edited by Paul Gosling, Conleth Manning and John Waddell. (Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. 2007). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
