The National Monuments Service's description
Located on a rise/terrace overlooking a probably fording point on the Gweestion River which is 40m to S. A weir is indicated on the river here on the 1931 OS 6-inch map. An enclosure (MA071-023----) is nearby.
This castle is listed in the 1635-37 Strafford Inquisition of Co. Mayo: '…the castle of Newcastle, alias Castle noo Gallen,..' (O’Sullivan 1958, 128). It is not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps but is marked on an estate map drawn up in 1720-21 where it is shown close to the NE bank of the River Gweestion, roughly where Newcastle House is located on the 1931 OS 6-inch map. There is no visible trace of the castle at ground level. A two-storey farmhouse and adjacent farmyard with cluster of farm sheds stand on the location.
