Ringfort - rath

In average, rather stony pasture, on a rise with a slight SW-facing slope, with good views over the surrounding gently undulating terrain.
Shown on the 1913 OS 6-inch map as a subcircular area (diam. c. 30m) truncated at W and N by straight field boundaries and crossed to E of centre by a road on a NNE−SSW axis.
This rath has been greatly damaged. The road has been removed but a NNE−SSW field wall which bordered the W side of the road still crosses the centre of the rath. To E of this wall, the rath has been levelled; slight undulations in the ground surface partly indicate its original outline. The W half (c. 28m N-S; c. 13m E-W) of the rath is extant but is tightly boxed in at S, W and N by field walls. At S a low bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.4m) can be traced in a shallow E−W curve but its external slope has been is cut to the vertical. faced with stone and incorporated into a straight E−W field wall. The W arc of the rath has been truncated and overlain by a N−S field wall, which has a very slight curve; a row of low stones protruding from the sod immediately to W of this wall may mark the original outer edge of the rath. At N a slight curving rise appears to be another remnant of the rath bank and this too is incorporated on its outer edge into a straight E−W field wall. The interior area of the extant W half has an uneven, stony surface, and is engulfed in a thicket of blackthorn and hawthorn scrub. There is an enclosure (MA071-132----) 150m to SE.
