The National Monuments Service's description

This record is based on a reference in the Western People, dated 5th Feb 1933, to the local tradition that a souterrain (MA030-079----) in Gurteens, on the W side of Ballina, extended under the Moy and exited at Palmyra, Ardnaree, on the E bank of the river. It is not possible that a souterrain extends beneath the Moy, but the tradition does suggest that an opening to a souterrain was at one time known in the Ardnaree area of Ballina. Its exact location, however, remains unknown.
