The National Monuments Service's description
Located at the southern tip of Derreens Island in the NW end of Carrowmore Lake. Not indicated on the 1838 and 1921 OS 6-inch maps. Noone (1991, 108) recorded that 'Nearby, approximately 60 feet south of the old church (MA018-011001-), was a small dwelling, probably, for a priest or religious community.' The island was densely cloaked in ferns and scrub at the time of visit, and the area immediately surrounding the church was difficult to examine but no trace of a house was found here or along the margin (Wth c. 20m) of fern-free, stony ground bordering the shoreline c. 25m S of the church. There are ruins of vernacular stone-built houses (MA018-012----) at the N end of the island.
