The National Monuments Service's description

Situated in an area of undulating bog and mixed quality pasture along the coast of N Mayo. The large fortified promontory in Conaghra (MA006-001001-) is visible to the N, and sheer cliffs partly surround the site on three sides. A sub-circular NW-facing headland with a very narrow neck shows slight traces of having been fortified. A natural crevice across the neck seems to have been deepened into a fosse and traces of a collapsed revetted wall lie 40m to the S. The interior is featureless and much of it has recently slipped into the sea. It had not been previously recorded. It is one of three promontory forts (MA006-008---, MA006-009----) along this N facing stretch of coastline and is 400m west of MA006-011001-.

These descriptions are derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway. In this instance the entry has been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
