The National Monuments Service's description
A broad headland (130m N-S; 160m E-W) lying in a mountainous area of bog at Benwee Head may have been defended by a straight earthen bank and ditch. The defences are quite substantial running from the W cliff edge for a distance of about 50m where they deteriorate (as seen from Markus's aerials). On the digital globe imagery more extensive ramparts, with an external bank, internal fosse and internal ledge can be seen at the centre of the promontory and close to the E edge. This promontory fort was viewed only from the air and was not visited on the ground.
This description is derived from the MA thesis of Markus Casey 1999 The coastal promontory forts of Ireland. A survey of counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Clare. Unpublished MA thesis, National University of Ireland, Galway and three reports that were funded by the Heritage Council (2001, 2002, 2003). In this instance the entry has been revised.
