Ringfort - rath

In reclaimed pasture, 300m E of townland boundary with Ballylanders, earthwork (LI049-250----) lies 210m to the NE. Annotated 'Rathadooneen' on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map where it is depicted as a raised circular-shaped area defined by a scarp, intersected at N and SW by post-1700 field boundary running N-S. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a raised oval-shaped platform (dims. c. 28m NW-SE; 25m NE-SW) defined by a scarp, with fosse from E-S-W-N and external bank from E-S, incorporated into a field boundary from S-W-N. In 1840 the Ordnance Survey recorded this monument as one of ‘three ancient forts in the townland’ (OSNB Abbeyfeale to Bruree, 229, 233). Monument visible as a circular-shaped area defined by a tree lined fosse and bank on Bórd Gáis Éireann Curraleigh West-Limerick gas pipeline aerial photograph (BGE 1/5000; Site 3/18) taken 03/11/1984, Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13 and on Google Earth orthoimages.
