Field system

The National Monuments Service's description

In pasture, immediately SW and NE of a road that marks the townland boundary with Oolahills East, immediately NW of townland boundary with Boherdotia, S of Shanaclogh House. An enclosure (LI033A006002-) lies to NE, Oola Castle (LI033A008002-) and earthwork (LI033A008001-) lie 330m to the NE and a deserted medieval village (LI033A007----) lies 380m to the NE. Not marked on OSi historic maps.
The field system was first identified on oblique aerial photographs (CUCAP AVT046/045; AYO038) 2/07/1968 as a pattern of rectilinear cropmarks, some perpendicular to each other. The field system and possible further earthworks are visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages. In E of the field system, two rectangular-shaped areas enclosed by a fosse are visible; one in the S (dims. c. 87m NW-SE; 50m NE-SW) and one in the N (dims. c. 83m NW-SE; 20m NE-SW) both are truncated in the centre by a post-1700 field boundary running NE-SW. A possible D-shaped enclosure in the S of the field system intersected at SW and SE by the Limerick-Cork railway line running NW-SE. A possible circular-shaped cropmark (diam. c. 50m) S of enclosure (LI033A006002-) in NW quadrant of the field system is visible on the Google Earth orthoimage 11/03/2014. Excavations in 1935 by F.T. Riley at the nearby enclosure (LI033A006002-) recorded drains around the site and some of the cropmarks visible on aerial photographs may represent drainage or reclamation works associated with the landscaping of the lands around Shanaclogh House (NMI Topographical Files).
