The National Monuments Service's description

The precise location of a leper hospital founded in the village of Hospital in 1467 has not been identified (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 351). According to Lee (1966, 22) the town of Hospital 'owes its name to the presence there of a leper hospital founded in 1215 by Geoffrey de Marisco who introduced a commandery of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John of Jerusalem (LI032-147002-) to the town.
