Standing stone

The National Monuments Service's description

In pasture in a large field at the NE tip of Lough Gur which lies 450m to WSW. A standing stone (LI032-049----) lies 75m to NW and the Early Medieval settlement site known as the Spectacles (LI032-014012-) is located 410m to W, a standing stone also known as Leagaun (Site S; LI032-048----) lies 420m to NNW.
The standing stone (LI032-050----) is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map, but is later depicted as an antiquity annotated 'Leagaun' on 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch and the Cassini ed. OSi 6-inch maps. It is not visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. The standing stone was identified by Windle (1912, 304, Plate XXIII) as Site R. Described by O’Kelly (1944, 29) as at ‘390’ [119m OD] a very low limestone pillar 1’ 6” [0.46m] high, and 10” [0.25m] by 6” [0.15m] at the base. It is probable that this stone was much higher at the time’. Grogan (1989, Vol. 2, 271) attached the site name of ‘Lough Gur 4’ to the monument within his PhD thesis. The location of the site is visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 16/03/2016 and 28/06/2018. The standing stone does not appear to survive above ground level.
